On November 5th and 6th, during National Epilepsy Awareness Month, over 3,000 people will participate in the second annual Epilepsy Awareness Day and Expo at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. Epilepsy is the fourth leading neurological disorder; affecting about 2.3 million adults in the U.S. One in 26 Americans will develop the condition during their lifetime.
One of the “purple shirt people” who will be in attendance is Mark, 37, of Lake Forest, who experienced his first seizure at age 15 while on a ski trip. In recent years, Mark has gained better control of his seizures after his physician, Dr. Diane Stein, prescribed Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) Therapy, a non-drug treatment for epilepsy.
