Join Anaheim Fire & Rescue for the Great California Shakeout
October 15 be Prepared to Shake!
ANAHEIM, Calif. (October 6, 2015) – At 10:15 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, Anaheim Fire & Rescue invites you to join millions of people in schools, businesses and households to participate in the annual Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill. This drill reinforces the importance of “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” and other emergency plans in the event of an earthquake.
“You and your family could be in any location when an earthquake occurs,” said Anaheim Fire & Rescue Chief Randy R. Bruegman. “This drill takes only a minute to practice, but in the event of an earthquake you will instinctively know how to respond.”
In addition to the immediate steps of “Drop, Cover, and Hold On,” consider the following safety tips:
- After earthquakes, always use flashlights for light
- DO NOT use candles, lighters or open flames
- Until you know that there is no gas leak, DO NOT use your electrical appliances, light stitches or other devices as they can cause a spark
- Be sure to check vents to make sure nothing separated before using your water heater or furnace.
“Through the involvement and participation in the Great California ShakeOut, we hope to educate and prepare our residents,” said Battalion Chief Tim Adams, who leads Fire’s Emergency Management and Preparedness Section. “Personal preparedness is the best tool you can have to be ready, respond to, and recover from an earthquake.”
