ANAHEIM, CALIF (August 30, 2020) – On the evening of Saturday, August 29, 2020, just after 9:30 pm, Anaheim Police Officers went to the 2500 block of E. Ward Terrace in the City of Anaheim, in an attempt to locate 25-year-old Jesse David Nava, an Anaheim resident. Nava was wanted on a warrant by Anaheim detectives for felony sexual assault.
Officers located Nava, who armed himself with a large kitchen knife. A confrontation occurred between Nava and the officers resulting in an officer-involved shooting. Nava was struck at least once by gunfire. He was transported by ambulance to UCI Medical Center, where he underwent emergency surgery. On Sunday, August 30, 2020, at about 9:30 am, Nava died of his injuries.
The Anaheim Police Department Major Incident Review Team is conducting an internal investigation which will be overseen by the Office of Independent Review. The City of Anaheim’s Police Review Board has been briefed on the circumstances of the shooting and they will continue to monitor developments. The Anaheim officers involved in the shooting were wearing body-worn cameras. The captured video footage was provided to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, who is conducting the criminal investigation of the shooting.
