ANAHEIM WINS ECO-CITY AWARD FOR “GREENEST CITY IN ORANGE COUNTY”
ANAHEIM, CA – (October 3, 2014) – For the second consecutive year, the City of Anaheim was awarded the 2014 Eco-City Award for being the “Greenest in the County” at the Orange County chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Eco Awards ceremony. The award recognizes Anaheim for its commitment to environmental initiatives that demonstrate leadership in sustainability.
Anaheim won the award for its suite of green projects, including:
· ARTIC (Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center), a LEED Platinum designed world-class transportation hub set to open in December 2014
· The Anaheim Convention Center’s newly-operating 2.4 Megawatt (MW) rooftop solar panel system
· The Water Sustainability Campus, including a decentralized small-scale water recycling plant adjacent to City Hall
· Locally-operated renewable energy projects which use landfill gas or organic waste to generate power, thereby helping to meet state mandates and reduce the City’s carbon footprint
“I am extremely proud that Anaheim has again received the Eco-City Award,” said Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait. “It is a true testament to the commitment of our employees, and their dedication to helping our city be resourceful and energy-efficient.”
Anaheim also extends opportunities for the community to be involved with green initiatives, including features in its General Plan that encourage sustainable development, working with schools to promote efficiency in construction, and promoting water conservation for residents and businesses during the drought.
The collaborative effort amongst the Public Utilities, Convention Center, Community Development, Public Works, Planning, and Community Services departments also garnered the City of Anaheim the same biennial award in 2012 when it was first established.
