REP. SANCHEZ PRAISES SETTLEMENT OF ANAHEIM VOTING RIGHTS ACT CASE
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-46) today praised the settlement of Moreno v. Anaheim, which challenged the City of Anaheim’s method of electing City Council members through an at-large system. The lawsuit alleged the system violates the California Voting Rights Act. The settlement paves the way for a November 2014 ballot initiative that, if approved, would move the city to district-based elections by 2016.
“Everyone deserves an advocate,” said Rep. Sanchez. “A district-based election system in Anaheim would ensure that every community has an advocate they trust and a voice for their neighborhood. I am pleased that the city can move forward from this unnecessary, expensive lawsuit and residents can make the decision for themselves in November.”
