You are cordially invited to attend a meeting of the Program for Progressives on Friday, August 9, 2013, from 7:15 p.m.- 9:30 p.m.
In the aftermath of controversial incidents involving cops in both Fullerton and Anaheim, local residents have banded together to demand that police oversight committees be formed to monitor law enforcement agencies in both cities. But the goal of establishing them remains as elusive as ever as politicians, police unions, and city bureaucrats do what they can to thwart their creation.
JANE RANDS, member of the Fullerton Police Oversight Proposal Committee, will talk about how a genuine police oversight committee is supposed to be organized and will speak about the work her organization has undertaken to establish one in the City of Fullerton.
DUANE ROBERTS, Editor & Publisher of the Anaheim Investigator Blog, will address how the City of Anaheim, in an attempt to appease residents concerned about police brutality, are in the process of creating a committee that is weak, toothless, and ineffective–not to mention funded by the cops themselves.
Additionally, we will explore other strategies used to strengthen community control of the police.
Members of SANTA ANA COP WATCH, a local grassroots organization involved in fighting police brutality and misconduct, will deliver a presentation about their activities in monitoring police activity in the working-class neighborhoods of Santa Ana.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Snacks at 6:45 p.m. Presentation begins at 7:15 p.m. Discussion to follow.
