ANAHEIM CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERS PROPOSED FISCAL YEAR 2013/14 BUDGET THAT INVESTS IN NEIGHBORHOODS AND PUBLIC SAFETY
ANAHEIM, Calif. (June 13, 2013) A preview of the proposed Fiscal Year 2013/14 Anaheim City budget was presented at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, with a continued commitment to investing in the Anaheim community. The proposed $1.6 billion balanced budget includes provisions dedicated to neighborhood improvements, public infrastructure, public safety and more.
The public hearing will continue at the next scheduled City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 18, with the budget workshops beginning at 2 p.m. Final budget approval is anticipated at the June 18 meeting in advance of the July 1 fiscal year opening.
The FY 2013/14 General Fund is balanced, at a 2.4 percent increase from last year’s budget. An over performance of revenues provides an additional $8.7 million for enhancements per City Council approval. Approximately $5.3 million will be allotted for one-time enhancements and $3.4 million will be designated for ongoing improvements. The proposed budget also allows for a contribution to the City’s reserves resulting in a balance of $20.1 million, or 8.2% of the General Fund budget.
The proposed budget outlines the City’s revenue sources that support the General Fund: Transient Occupancy Tax, Sales Tax, Property Tax and other revenues. Approximately $247 million is expected to be generated from these sources in FY 2013/14 to support vital services citywide.
Neighborhood improvements are a key element to the proposed FY 2013/14 budget. The plan includes the completion of the Miraloma Family Resource Center, construction of a new park near Guinida Lane and Paul Revere Elementary School, and contributes to continued investment in new bike paths, walking paths, and elements which contribute to quality of life throughout the Anaheim community.
Public infrastructure is also vital for a healthy and vibrant community, and keeping to a regular maintenance schedule allows the city’s infrastructure to remain sound and relevant, which gives residents peace of mind. The FY 2013/14 budget calls for continued maintenance as well as upgrades.
More than half of the General Fund expenditures are allocated to keeping Anaheim safe. The Police Department is proposing to add 13 new officers to its force, as well as dedicating funds to services and equipment to enhance police services, and increased investment in youth programs such as Gang Reduction and Intervention Partnership (GRIP), Safe Schools, Cops 4 Kids, the Junior Cadet Program, and the Police Explorer Program. The Fire Department is proposing to add a fire company back in service, to send even more firefighters for paramedic training, and to increase community programs on fire service and prevention.
