Sat., March 30, 2013, 4-7 pm at the Anaheim Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 511 S. Harbor Blvd. Anaheim, CA
On March 9, 2012, José Ucelo was picked up for work by an employer at the Home Depot on Brookhurst in Anaheim. This employer introduced himself as “Nick,” which Mr. Ucelo later learned was an alias used by Michael Tebb, a serial wage burglar. The employer brought Mr. Ucelo to the work site in Garden Grove, where he worked approximately 10 hours. After the work was done, Mr. Ucelo asked for his pay, but “Nick” became aggressive, attempting to start a physical fight and refusing to pay. Mr. Ucelo backed away and called the police to report the wage theft. Ironically, Mr. Tebb at this point also called the police, falsely accusing Mr. Ucelo of theft. Multiple police officers arrived on the scene, and detained Mr. Ucelo, but not Mr. Tebb.
Mr. Ucelo was transferred from the County Jail to federal immigration custody, in spite of having the false charges against him dropped. The complications with the immigration case have caused severe hardship for Mr. Ucelo.
He was facing deportation and possible separation from his 10-month-old son, but the proceedings have fortunately been dropped.
We must defend Mr. Ucelo and other day laborers who face wage theft and exploitation by criminal employers. Join us in our victory party in support of restitution for Mr. Ucelo and the human rights of day laborers.
