The Anaheim Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoint on June 5, 2015, in the 400 block of S. Brookhurst Street between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.

The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely. Continue reading→

DRUNKEN WRONG-WAY FREEWAY DRIVER SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR MURDERING ONE AND INJURING TWO OTHERS IN HEAD-ON CRASH

SANTA ANA – A drunken driver was sentenced today to 15 years to life in state prison for murdering one and injuring two others in a head-on crash after driving the wrong way into oncoming traffic on two separate Orange County freeways. Ruben Gurrola, 26, Pomona, was found guilty by a jury on Nov. 14, 2014, of one felony count each of murder, driving under the influence causing bodily injury, driving with a blood alcohol level .08 percent or more causing injury, and a sentencing enhancement for causing great bodily injury.

Late on the night of Jan. 28, 2012, Gurrola left a Newport Beach bar with his then 24-year-old girlfriend Allison Poon after several hours of drinking alcohol with friends. The defendant took a cab with Poon to a friend’s house. After arriving at the home, Gurrola got into the driver’s seat of a Honda sedan and drove away with Poon in the passenger seat. At approximately 1:40 a.m., the defendant drove under the influence of alcohol on the wrong side of the freeway into oncoming traffic, heading northbound in the southbound lanes of the 241 toll road. Several motorists called 911 and had to swerve to avoid being hit by the defendant. Continue reading→

The Anaheim Police Department Traffic Detail will be conducting a DUI/Driver License checkpoint at Santa Ana Canyon / Imperial Highway tonight. Also, there will be special DUI Roving Saturation Patrols during the month of February.

DUI/Driver License Checkpoint is set for Friday, February 13, from 7:00 PM to 3:00 AM.
Roving DUI Saturation Patrols will be deploying on February 13, 14, 17, 19, 21, 24, 26, 27, and 28 between 7:00 PM and 3:00 AM.

Orange County DUI Task Force Holiday Crackdown on Impaired Driving

SANTA ANA, Calif. – (December 12, 2014) — This time of year, with all the holiday parties and festive occasions, many partygoers will be drinking. If you are celebrating with alcohol this holiday season, local law enforcement agencies have a message for you: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over. Due to the increase in drunk-driving-related fatalities around the holidays each year, law enforcement agencies across the country will be out in force December 12, 2014 through January 1, 2015 actively searching for drunk drivers.

The Orange County Avoid DUI Task Force will be aggressively looking for drunk drivers this holiday season with plans in place for 14 DUI/Driver’s License Checkpoints, a minimum of 27 local roving DUI Saturation Patrols and a DUI Warrant/Probation Sweep. Continue reading→
