ANAHEIM, CA – (February 11, 2015) – Children are always on the go, and the City of Anaheim offers two programs that can help parents keep up with the fun. The Bookmobile and Fun on Wheels programs are ways that kids can get involved while boosting creativity and learning. Click on the video links to watch how Anaheim is On Your Side in providing opportunities for children.
Since it began in 1958, the Bookmobile has been a program and beloved community tradition that brings the Library right to you. What began as a 17-foot truck upon its initial launch became a 52-foot tractor trailer in 1994. Today, this clean energy 35-foot bookmobile bus runs on compressed natural gas and follows two different routes throughout the City of Anaheim. At each of our 14 neighborhood stops and five school stops, kids line up for their turn to hop on board and find a book. The program is completely free with a library card, and offers books, magazines, and DVDs for all ages.
Fun on Wheels is a mobile recreation program with two vans that visit different neighborhoods to provide children with homework help, educational activities, arts and crafts projects, and fitness fun. For parents who are not able to commute or who enjoy the convenience of participating in activities in such close proximity, the free program makes stops at 10 neighborhoods weekly and welcomes children of all ages.
The programs are part of a movement launched in 2013 as a result of a 2012 Youth Services Assessment study, conducted by The Olin Group and funded by Disneyland Resort. The study found Anaheim is a youth-centric city, yet more programs are needed to provide opportunities for youth to learn and grow to their full potential. As a result, ACT Anaheim (Accelerate Change Together) was launched to fund the programs and services that are needed to give our City’s most vulnerable youth a chance to succeed in life.
