OC Residents Visit, Pledge & ‘Do the Right Thing’ at County Facilities
Hundreds of Orange County residents helped commemorate the 17th Annual America Recycles Day by bringing their household hazardous waste to the county’s free Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center in Anaheim.
The center is the largest of four HHW facilities operated by OC Waste & Recycling. The other facilities—in Huntington Beach, Irvine and San Juan Capistrano—also had a strong turnout of visitors on America Recycles Day.
The Day, sponsored by Keep America Beautiful, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit group, is designed to celebrate the benefits of recycling. It is also presented as an education platform to motivate people to recycle more and recycle smarter at work, at home and on the go.
All visitors to the Anaheim center and the other county facilities were invited to take the national pledge to “do the right thing” and help the environment and keep America beautiful by always remembering to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. In addition, visitors received vouchers for free pizzas from Papa John’s and coupons for free children’s tickets to the Discovery Cube Orange County.
The activities at the Anaheim center featured several OCWR recycling and household hazardous specialists who were on hand to greet visitors. Also on hand were representatives from OCWR’s colorful Eco Challenge education and school outreach program. The site’s Reuse Center for visitors to take home free leftover common household products did brisk business throughout the day.
Household hazardous waste includes common cleaning/gardening/painting/workshop products or materials that contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive ingredients. Home hazardous waste also includes propane tanks and other flammable items, as well as electronic waste such as computer monitors, radios, TVs and video game consoles.
Every day OC residents generate up to 14,000 tons of trash and untold amounts of household hazardous waste. The four HHW Collection Centers last year received a total of nearly 7 million pounds of waste.
