Suspected Murder/Suicide: 700 block South Morningstar Drive
On Friday, September 19, 2014, at 8:29 AM Anaheim Police Officers were called to a single family residence in the 700 block of S. Morningstar Dr. to investigate the discovery of two dead bodies. Grandparents had come to watch their 7 month old granddaughter. Upon entering the house, they discovered their daughter and son-in-law on the first floor of the home. Both appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound and a handgun was seen nearby the bodies. They found their granddaughter in an upstairs bedroom unharmed. Anaheim Fire & Rescue Paramedics responded and pronounced both of the victims deceased. The two decedents were identified as: Natalie Rangel-Diaz and John Thomas Diaz, married and both 32 years-old, of Anaheim. Their 7 month old daughter was taken into protective custody pending follow-up by County of Orange Social Services. The investigation into how the suspected murder/suicide took place is on-going. We are currently not seeking any suspects and there have been no arrests related to this case.
Fry’s Electronics Robbery – Related Hit & Run – Subsequent Officer Involved Shooting
On Friday, September 19, 2014 at 1:51 PM, Anaheim Police Officers were called to investigate an armed robbery at the Fry’s Electronics in the 3300 block of E. La Palma Ave. As officers drove to the scene, witnesses called 9-1-1 to report possible suspects in the armed robbery had entered a dark colored SUV and sped out of the Fry’s parking lot.
A short time later, Anaheim Police Dispatch received reports of a hit and run traffic collision in the intersection of Tustin Ave. and Miraloma Ave. involving a tan pickup truck and a dark SUV. After the collision, two male suspects were seen running from the dark SUV. One male ran east on Miraloma Ave. from Tustin Ave. Witnesses directed a passing California Highway Patrol Officer to that suspect. He was detained without incident and transferred to the custody of Anaheim Police Robbery Detectives. That suspect has been identified as Paul Brian Marval III, 39 (01-16-1975), of Lake Elsinore. He was arrested and booked at the Anaheim Police Department Temporary Detention Facility, shortly after 11:00 PM, for Robbery, Attempted Burglary, Probation Violation, and Possession of a Stolen Vehicle (Bail – $100,000). Through investigation, Detectives learned the dark SUV, a 2012 Black Honda Pilot, had been stolen in the City of Corona (CA).
Witnesses positively identified Marval as having been involved in the armed robbery at Fry’s and subsequent hit and run traffic collision.
The other suspect in the armed robbery at Fry’s and hit and run traffic collision ran northeast of Tustin Ave. / Miraloma Ave. Witnesses reported that suspect was pointing a handgun at bystanders as he ran. A short time later, witnesses reported the suspect ran into the car dealership exchange parking lot in the 1300 block of N. Tustin Ave. The employees of the dealership lot were ordered into the building by their management for their safety. Anaheim Police Tactical Response Group Members were requested to the scene to search for the armed suspect. A short time after they began their search, they located a male inside a dark BMW SUV within the dealership lot. Two armored transport vehicles were utilized to protect the officers as they attempted to negotiate with the suspect to surrender peacefully.
For more than an hour, negotiations were attempted to no avail. Without warning, the suspect began firing at the officers and there was an exchange of gunfire. During that exchange, the suspect was wounded. Anaheim Fire & Rescue Paramedics, who are integrated into the Tactical Response Group, immediately medically assessed the suspect and pronounced him deceased.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office (OCDA) is taking charge of the Officer Involved Shooting (OIS) investigation. This will include the identity of the deceased suspect and any forensic processing of the shooting scene. Questions regarding that portion of the investigation should be directed to OCDA. Additionally, the Office of Independent Review (OIR) and the Anaheim Police Department Major Incident Review Team responded to the scene.
