ANAHEIM OFFERS COOLING CENTERS AND HEALTH CARE TIPS DURING THE WARM WEATHER
ANAHEIM, Calif. (July 24, 2014) – In times of higher than normal temperatures, Anaheim libraries and community centers serve as regional Cooling Centers, offering relief from the hot weather.
The list of Cooling Centers is listed below. In addition, the following health care tips can help residents remain safe from heat-related illnesses.
Monday-Friday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Monday-Thursday: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday-Wednesday: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Thursday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Monday-Thursday: 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Monday-Thursday: Noon to 8 p.m.; Friday: Noon to 6 p.m.

Recommended precautions to prevent heat related illnesses as provided by Anaheim Fire & Rescue, include:
- Stay cool indoors. Use your air conditioner to cool your home. If you don’t have air conditioning, visit public facilities such as shopping malls, community centers or libraries to stay cool. Do not rely on electric fans as your primary cooling device during a heat wave. When the temperature is in the high 90’s or higher, a fan will not prevent heat-related illness. A cool shower or bath is a more effective way to cool off.
- Drink more fluids, especially water. Don’t wait until you are thirsty.
- Check often on those at high-risk. This includes older adults, those with chronic medical conditions, people with disabilities, those who take certain medications and children. Make sure their air conditioner is turned on, or offer to take them to a cooler place.
- Minimize strenuous activity and exercise, especially during the peak hours or 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Avoid over-exertion and schedule outdoor activities for the cooler part of the day. Spend as much time as possible in the shade.
- Drink at least 2-5 glasses of water per hour during extreme heat, even if you do not feel thirsty.
- Use sunscreen and wear light, loose-fitting clothing and a hat to provide shade from the sun.
- Never leave a person or pet unattended in a closed car or other vehicle.
