OC Labor Leader Julio Perez is leading a candlelight vigil on Monday night, Dec. 23, 2013, in protest against disgraced blogger Matt Cunningham and the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce.
The vigil will take place at 6 pm, at Anaheim’s City Hall, located at 200 S. Anaheim, in Anaheim.
Here are the details, from the event’s Facebook page:
I am writing to tell you about a candlelight vigil in your neighborhood aimed at healing our community who have lost their children to violence and creating the culture of one Anaheim.
Earlier this week, a local blog that is funded by the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce published a story mocking all the violence and injustice we are working so hard to address in Anaheim, such as adequate representation at City Hall and a safe environment for our children to learn and play.
In the blog, writer Matt Cunningham posted staged photos of a defaced teddy bear lying next to a Virgin de Guadalupe candle — a scene clearly designed to mimic the memorial sites that pay tribute to the lives of young men killed in recent police and gang shootings.
These actions are beyond insensitive and offensive, not only to every mother who has lost a son, but to every Latino resident who is working to have our voices heard above the drum beat of special interests that have for so long controlled the City and diverted resources away from struggling neighborhoods.
To make matters worse, the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce is a lobby group that receives taxpayer money – your money. And they’re using that money to defile Latino traditions and disgrace the memories of all the young people we’ve lost to violence.
This does nothing to rebuild trust or help our community heal from the recent unrest in Anaheim.
We want to change that, and the first step is healing. So we will be holding a vigil to reclaim the memories of our youth and restore dignity to our traditions.
The second step is accountability. So at the vigil, we will also be demanding that the Anaheim Chamber of Commerce end its relationship with this political insider, Matt Cunningham. If they don’t, then we will be demanding the City Council cut off funding to the Chamber of Commerce until it can employ representatives who do not mock the communities they’re supposed to serve.
Please join me and our neighbors Monday December 23 at 6pm, starting at the steps of the Anaheim City Hall.
