CHIEF OF POLICE SELECTION TO BE PRESENTED TO ANAHEIM CITY COUNCIL AT DEC. 17 CITY COUNCIL MEETING
ANAHEIM, Calif. (December 11, 2013) On Dec. 17 at the regularly-scheduled City Council meeting, the Anaheim City Council will be presented the City Manager’s selection for a permanent Chief of Police. City Manager Marcie Edwards will recommend Raul Quezada, who is currently serving as the Interim Chief of Police. This follows practice where executive appointments are made by the City Manager, pending City Council confirmation.
The Anaheim Chief of Police oversees a department of more than 500 full-time and more than 100 part-time sworn officers and non-sworn personnel in service to Anaheim’s 346,000 residents, businesses, and 20 million annual visitors. The Anaheim Police Department is a leader in crime prevention, emergency preparedness and response, and community-oriented policing through long-term solutions by engaging the community in problem solving.
Quezada joined the Anaheim Police Department in 1996. He began his law enforcement career in 1993 with the Los Angeles Police Department. He has worked in a variety of assignments, including Patrol, Traffic, Police Activities League, Community Policing, Tourist-Oriented Policing, and Detectives. As a Lieutenant, he worked as a Watch Commander, District Commander, Strategic Services Commander and finally as the Internal Affairs Commander. Quezada was promoted to Captain in 2010 and was assigned as the Investigations Division Commander. He would later assume command of the Operations Support Division, which includes the Community Services Bureau. He also served as the Special Tactics Detail Commander. On May 17, 2013 he was appointed interim Chief of Police following the retirement of former Police Chief John Welter.
In addition to local law enforcement leadership, Quezada has also provided consulting services to police officials in Bogota, Columbia, and Culiacan, Mexico. Quezada received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Professional Studies from California State University Long Beach. He is currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration program at Columbia Southern University. He is a graduate of the Sherman Block Leadership Institute and P.O.S.T Command College.
